Types of skin lesion
Skin Tags, also known as acrochordons, are small, benign growths that appear on the skin's surface. These lesions are typically flesh-coloured or slightly darker and can vary in size. They often develop in areas where the skin folds or rubs together, such as the neck, armpits, groin, or eyelids. Although skin tags are usually harmless, they can sometimes cause discomfort or irritation, especially if they get caught on clothing or jewellery. The exact cause of skin tags is still unknown, but they are more common in individuals who are overweight, have diabetes, or experience hormonal changes during pregnancy.
A Seborrhoeic Keratosis is a common noncancerous skin growth that appears waxy and can range in colour from brown to black or tan. These lesions are often found on the face, chest, shoulders, or back and can vary in size with a slightly elevated, scaly surface. While a seborrhoeic keratosis is generally harmless, some individuals dislike the appearance or the irritation.
Removal of skin tags and seborrhoeic keratoses is a simple procedure that can be performed by a medical professional to improve the cosmetic appearance or alleviate any discomfort they may cause.
What is the treatment experience?
Shave excision is a commonly performed procedure for the removal of skin lesions. Skin tags and seborrhoeic keratoses are benign growths that can occur on various parts of the body, including the neck and armpits. Shave excision involves utilizing a sharp blade to cut off the skin lesion at its base, resulting in minimal scarring and a quick healing process.
The skin lesion is inspected to ensure it is benign in origin. If it seems suspicious, then you may be advised to attend your GP to involve a dermatologist.
The area is cleaned with a sterilising wash, then local anaesthetic is injected to the base of the skin lesion. This creates no more than a stinging sensation for up to 10 seconds.
The local anaesthetic also contains adrenaline, which acts to constrict the blood vessels in the skin and effectively eliminates bleeding.
The skin lesion is removed at its base with the blade and then the wound is cauterised. This whole process is painless.
An absorbent plaster is applied to protect the area. This can be removed after 24 hours. The wound will fully heal just like a graze would, over the next 1-3 weeks.
